“Are you ready yet?”
I’m sitting in the quiet right now. Only the dog and I have made our way into Friday. But I know in just a few minutes I will need to make my way upstairs to wake a sleepy 2nd grader. His movement always starts s.l.o.w. Until he sees the clock, this new skill we are working on of time management pops into gear. And he hears a bus I know is not his. But every morning it sets him into fast mode as reality sets in.
It’s our normal school morning rush. Is your homework in your backpack? Did you grab your lunch?
And we go out the door with him running ahead, “Mama, are you ready? Come on, I’ll miss the bus.”
In my heart there is so much I want him to be ready for. Beyond buses and getting to school on time.
I look at his blue shoes lying on the laundry room floor. The ones he was so proud to pick out. They are ready for his feet and to carry him into his day.
I pray as I see them, “May you be ready for all that comes towards you today. The mixture of emotions that is age seven. Holding your favorite stuffed animal at night, ready to fight with swords on an imaginary battlefield when you awake. Ready to think of what is ‘lovely and true and praiseworthy’ when other voices whisper lies about who you are. Ready to notice the beauty that he has made in and all around you. Ready to be one who is loved by an amazing love. Ready to grow into all you have been made to be. Ready for lunchtime conversation and recess play and hearing words you have not yet heard. Ready for another Friday at school and the everydayness of life. Ready for the extraordinary ordinary. Ready to be seven and a boy treasured by your mama and a whole life that lies ahead of you.”
And now I stop because it is time to wake the sleeping one. Covered in blankets and prayers. Ready or not, our day begins.
Linking today with Five Minute Friday. Such a great practice and community. Write for five minutes on a word prompt, no analyzing, no overediting. Just write. Today’s prompt is Ready. Click here to see all the great voices on the word.
That is beautiful. I love your “Ready” prayer for him in his day. Thank you for the reminder.

Thank you Rebecca! I always love the various places responding to a word leads. And am glad we were linked up by each other!
My kids are a bit older, but I have those same prayers for them every day, every evening. Sadly, we do not have those blue shoes…my son would love them if they weren’t the rival school’s color! What a beautiful snapshot into your morning. thanks for sharing.
Lisa, yes there is nothing like parenting to bring out the need to pray.
My son loves blue….and I hadn’t until just now connected that it is his school color. At least for elementary school.
Happy Friday to you.
What a lovely post! Your mama’s heart shines through as you write about your son. You have a beautiful smile, by the way! Stopped by from FMF. So glad to meet you!
Leah
Thank you…it has been a long journey to him, to being his mother.
Your encouragement is heart warming!! Good to meet you as well
“Covered in blankets and prayers.” Love that! So precious. Beautiful post full of love for your son. Thank your for sharing your heart through your words. Blessings to you, new friend!
Thank you Julie! Although it has been a while since I have done FMF, it always amazes me the directions and thoughts and ways God leads each person. I’m grateful you stopped by, loved visiting your place, good to meet you!
What beautiful words! Especially the ‘covered in blankets and prayers’–my babies are 20 and 21, and that is my morning routine as well (ok, I don’t check their blankets any more–especially since one is married ;)–but I DO try to blanket them in prayer!).
Anita, when you said you don’t check their blankets anymore, the book I’ll Love you Forever came to mind…..
Realizing more and more on this parenting journey, the need for prayer.
Thank you for visiting.
What a beautiful prayer to pray over your child! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Rachel. I always love seeing where a word prompt takes everyone, and what God draws my heart towards.
