Let me be small

DSC_0210

Let me be small. For a moment.

A moment wrapped in my grandmas cozy quilt. The daylight dawning. I curl up, as close to the chair as I can manage. I snuggle in, wanting to feel small, protected, secure.

I need to start here. Each day. With something bigger than me. Stronger than me.

A hollowed out space where I can rest, where I can be small.

Where I don’t have to solve problems. Nor referee. Nor be an expert.

A place to just be. Silence.

A silence that speaks life into my soul. All the tiny spaces and cracks of it have a chance to speak up, to be noticed.

The small parts that need resurgence.

Renewal. It comes when I’m small.

It’s the place where I slowly take a breath. And I have to admit the world has survived while I slept.

Something bigger than me keeps the world spinning.

Soon I’ll have my own ‘worlds’ to spin. Cries to answer. Messages to return.

Soon responsibilities will make me larger.

But not yet. Let me be small. For just a moment longer.

It has been so long since I’ve joined Lisa Jo’s Five Minute Friday community. What better way to get back into a writing groove.

The plan is to write for five minutes, no major editing, on a word, a prompt that Lisa Jo provides. This week’s word is Small.

Read here to see all the places a word can lead.

  1. Hi Melanie! I am visiting from FMF.

I can just see you, all curled up in that blanket. Is there room for two? LOL! The silence is just a beautiful place to visit, I have to agree with that. Renewal really does come then, I just didn’t think about it that way.

So nice to meet you! I’m glad you decided to participate today, so I could read your post 🙂

    • Hi Ceil,
Great to meet you- I love this community and have missed writing this summer.
There is definitely room in the blanket!
      Happy Friday
      Melanie

  2. Such a nice post.

  3. Dear Melanie
We find it difficult to imagine our children’s lives won’t collapse while we sleep, I guess! It is in those small spaces where we find our big God.

    • HI Mia!
I love seeing your face pop up here! I’ve missed you..looking forward to fall and routine and writing more.
Here’s to resting in our big God.
      Love to you
      Melanie

  4. Ah, yes, we forget to be small don’t we?

    • I sure do forget! Especially taking care of small kids….it is good to have space to be small myself.
      Happy Friday Lucy!

  5. Such a beautiful write, friend! I love the reminder of how big God is. It’s funny how easy we forget! And yes, to be small a moment longer. I love those quiet times with the Lord. Anyway, it’s good to see you writing. Much love.

    • Hi Jacqui
I’m looking forward to the fall, when it seems more likely that I have those early quiet times. One of my favorite parts of writing again is connecting with hearts like yours.
      Love to you!
      Melanie

Thanks…once again, for your encouragement. I love how you share your heart. Praying for you and your family.

    Hi Melanie,
You have spoken what my soul longs for…that moment of quiet before God, and knowing how very big He is…beautiful…our puppy is about 11 months old…no accidents for several months, but the chewing, he is still really into chewing…glad to hear your puppy turned a corner w/ house training…they are cute and they do try our patience, or at least mine does 🙂

    • Thank you Dolly!
Our puppy is 11 months too (9/22 he will be 1yr). He too is a chewer- just repaired a hole he chewed in the wall of the laundry room- guess we took too long at the grocery store!

  8. I so love this. I want to curl up in a warm blanket and bask in my smallness. Have a lovely weekend!

Melanie, this was beautiful and for a moment I think I took part on your small wish, to be wrapped in my grandma’s quilt. But it is amazing how just thinking about being small really does nourishes that part of us that craves it, if only for a little bit. Have a wonderful weekend.

    • Hi Maria
Thanks for your encouragement…and sharing in being wrapped in a grandmothers quilt.
      Loved stopping by your place.
Happy weekend to you as well.
      Melanie

  10. Amazing how a small, silent moment can speak such volumes into our lives. Thanks for sharing.

I love this. You have reminded me that I have somehow skipped this part of my morning this week and that is probably the reason I feel so scattered. I like the way you referred to that “sacred time” as being small.
