Quiet in the Loud (Five Minute Friday)

Quiet

Sometimes in a loud, noisy room, my soul is quiet. Resting. Peaceful.

Sometimes in a quiet, calm room, my soul is loud. Pacing. Frantic.

“In quietness and trust is your strength.”

My Father reminds me of this verse. Again and again.

It’s not what the world tells me is the source of strength. It’s not what my to do list says will accomplish eliminating itself.

This morning I prayed with two friends. We slipped into the bridal room. Ahh. Not far away the nursery held our kids, delighted to play together. In the hall outside, voices carried and made plans for the upcoming services and discussed theology.

Our busy church. Our big building, hardly noticing three women praying it one of it’s rooms.

Quietness entered our room. No. Loudness exited it. Filtering out through the crack in the door.

Together our souls rested. Our prayers over sick children, schedule decisions and upcoming plans. Handed over to God. His capable hands taking our worry.

Quiet seeps into my soul. Tucks away in some corners opened up for it. Just a few minutes. But enough.

Enough to calm the frantic. Enough to still the pacing.

Enough quiet in my soul to buffer the noise that will soon come at me.

Enough to open the door.

And step out into my daily world. My life.

In quietness and trust is my strength.

Where do you go to find a few minutes (seconds) of quiet?

  1. Hi dear Melanie
This is the first time that I can say I am visiting you from Lisa-Jo’s. What a welcoming wonderful bunch of girls you all are! Wonder why I was nervous to join? Yes, dear one, I can actually feel your peace as you and our two lady friend were praying together. I love our Pappa’s promise where he assures us that where two or three are gathered in His name, there He is.
    Much love to you.

A few minutes of quiet… The trouble, at times, is quieting the mind I have with me always. I must practice quiet. I must practice quiet more.

  3. Awesome post.

  4. It never ceases to amaze me that when I stop, breath and wait that the Holy Spirit will calm my soul. A calming peace rushes over and through me. I notice later that all that noise surrounding me had disappeared. God so wants us to turn to him and when we do, He hushes our surroundings so we can hear his whisper.

  5. Melanie, there are so many things I love about this post, but four words are my favorite: handed over to God. Oh my soul. How that ushers in the quiet. i also love how your post transitions. The quiet is palpable. Wonderful piece, friend. Thank you.

  6. Melanie, I love “Quiet seeps into my soul. Tucks away in some corners opened for it.” I agree, we have to open our hearts to it..to this God who can speak loud in a quiet heart. And we can find it in the midst of a loud world as we practice that pursuit of Him. Such beautiful words and imagery friend!

    Hi Melanie,
Thank you for reminding me of that verse in Isaiah…and I love how you pointed out at the beginning that true soul quiet is not dependent on our circumstances, but rather our soul’s focus…So glad you could experience quiet with your friends praying…that is what I love about praying with my friends…such a gift…blessings 🙂
