Weekend Reflections

“Cursed is the one who trusts in man,
who depends on flesh for his strength
and whose heart turns away from the Lord.
He will be like a bush in the wastelands;
he will not see prosperity when it comes.
He will dwell in the parched places of the desert,
in a salt land where no one lives.

But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
    whose confidence is in him.
 He will be like a tree planted by the water
    that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
    its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
    and never fails to bear fruit.”

Jeremiah 17:5-8

When do I place my trust in men? In what situations am I likely to depend on my own abilities, on my flesh?

Do I see how choices that turn my heart from God lead me to living like a bush in a wasteland? Do I want to dwell alone in a desert land?

Oh, but the life giving attributes of trusting in the Lord!

I will be like a strong tree. Planted close to my source of life. My roots will be connected.

When adversity comes I will not fear.

Even in seasons of dryness, I do not worry.

Even when I don’t see it, there is fruit being borne.

Father, may I choose blessings over curses and place my trust, my full confidence in you.

  1. “It does not fear . . . . It has no worries.” This comes from rootedness in Him—yes. Thank you.

    • Thank you Aislinn for stopping by. This week I was wrestling with a decision that alternated between choosing rootedness in Him and in striving to make something happen. Need to keep remembering.

    Thank you for beautiful words, reminders, and a picture speaking its thousands of words to the soul. And, friend, thank you for the recent follow at my place. Humbled. Grateful. I have a love affair with trees, the branches and mostly their trunks. Such God Art.

    • Elizabeth- thank you! I love knowing that you love trees. When we lived in Washington we would love the old growth forest- God art- absolutely.
      I’m always going to read and thought, why haven’t I subscribed yet 🙂

  3. Even in…even where…He is ALWAYS there. Amen and amen!

  4. I’m stopping by from Jumping Tandem today.
    I love Sundays! Thank you for your wonderful words.
    I attended the online Saddleback Church service today to hear Nick Vujicic. His words truly touched my heart. I can not believe how emotional I still am.
    “If I fail, I try again,again,and again.. If you fail, are you going to try again? If you can’t get miracle, become one”. Nick Vujicic

  5. I want to be like a tree, whose roots are firmly planted in Him. Thank you for sharing your heart here so beautifully!

    I’ve used Ps. 1 and Jer. 17 re: trees, etc., for my husband’s prayer list. Dave is a quiet “tree”, but reaches out and touches so many and is a faithfully rooted servant of our Lord. As tough and tiring as life can be surrounding us, he and I rely on the Lord’s “water” flowing into our hearts and giving us the strength to serve Him. Yes….

  7. To be a strong tree, planted firmly… that is a wonderful thing.
