Roots and wings
So they say
are a parents goal.
My interpretation
18 years of roots
and then I’ll let you fly.
But now approaching
day one of Kindergarten.
I can’t ignore
these small wings budding.
Your excitement
A bus to ride
New friends to meet.
You’re looking to the future.
I see my eight month old son
Lots of hair and big brown eyes
Studying me
As we board a plane from Guatemala.
Five years
so fast.
Each year builds
more roots
more wings.
Increments
I wasn’t expecting.
I dig down
With intention
for your rooted-ness in Christ
I entrust
Your heart and soul
to the One who made you.
May your wings form
from the shaping of
loving God with all
your heart, soul, mind and strength.
And a growing measuring of how
Deep
Wide
Long
High
Is the love of Christ for you.
Go and be
All you were made to be
(but come back home
In 3 hours)

You really don’t realize all the small increments of wings until they start experiencing them. Kindergarten is great. Samuel is going to love it. I love the idea of holding the sign for the picture. I just saw someone else’s picture doing the same and wished I had seen that many years ago.
Karen, it has surprised me, the already letting go…in small ways. Letting him dress himself even if this pants are on backwards.
He seemed so excited to get on the bus. Gave us a quick wave and off he went.
Hi Melanie,
I noticed your blog from WLW and it caught my eye b/c my oldest child started Kindergarten a few weeks ago. My emotions ran the gamut, and it was only by God’s strength that I made it through those first days. It does get easier dropping her off knowing she is learning, making friends and having a blast. I just wanted to share.

Come back home in 3 hours did me in. I love this post! My youngest is 27 years old. She came to me from St Vincent in the Caribbean. I remember these days.
Dawn- Thank you! Great to hear from someone who has made it though 🙂
Hi Melanie! Do you know how touching this poem is? Teary-eyed as I write.
You are such a beautiful jewel, as is your precious son.

Thanks Kathleen…It seems it will always be a transition!
I remember my first born’s first day of school with bittersweet memories, but then that was 46 years ago, oh my how can that possibly be???? Can’t imagine where that time went…..seems like yesterday…..so how did he get through school, college, wedding and the birth of twins who are starting college themselves since yesterday????? God works in mysterious ways:)
Oh Val! Your first born and I are about the same age. Glad to hear that they…and you make it!
